There are certain expectations you are likely to get from a game known as 99 Levels to Hell. Such things as the game’s supreme destination, how many parts you need to clear to succeed in it, and maybe even the assumption of an overall concept. 99 Levels to Hell offers on all fronts, but that’s just the start of the depth involving content in this cartoonishly weakling, violent, randomized 2D steps platformer.
Apparently, you’re stuck on the entrance to hell, and the only way out is through. You enjoy as a mustachioed chap that has a shotgun of limited range but decent power, blasting enemies and picking up gold and any other goodies the truth is along the way. Each amount is a free-scrolling affair, at random , generated but with demanding parameters that ensure there’s always some sort of path to every part in the map. The basics are quite obvious enough– find key to start exit, blast predators, pick up gold, escape. Every ten levels there’s a boss struggle that, if you get, allows you to skip prior it on the following playthrough. Beat the level 15 boss and you can commence the next game from level 11, in case you don’t mind driving up all the renovations you might have come across along the route.
The starting shotgun is a good tool, and it packs a good punch against the early-game critters, but it’s not necessarily going to stay like that for long. They’re also packed with splattery blood which flies everywhere as soon as they’re shot, then when you’ve got a subsection full of wandering green hemorrhoids of goo plus traveling by air bats, it’s going to be drenched in crimson particle effects when you’re done. Shooting can be done using sometimes mouse and computer keyboard or twin-stick controls in addition to ammo is endless, so there’s silly not to turn every enemy in the stage into a red smear.
There’s enough going on in each level that it may actually take a bit to realize that 99 Levels to Hell has only just one notable issue, as well as that’s a bad case of programmer artwork.
